How Gift Aid works
The Gift Aid scheme is for gifts of money by individuals who pay UK income tax.
Gift Aid donations are regarded as having basic rate tax deducted by the donor. Charities take your donation -
that is money on which you've already paid tax - and reclaim the basic rate tax from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on its 'gross' equivalent being the amount before basic rate tax was deducted.
Basic rate tax is 20 per cent, so this means that if you give £10 using Gift Aid, it's worth £12.50 to the charity. For donations between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2011.
The charity will also get a separate government supplement of three pence on every pound you give.

Claiming back higher rate tax
If you pay higher rate tax, you can claim the difference between the higher rate of tax 40 and/or 50 per cent and the basic rate of tax 20 per cent on the total 'gross' value of your donation to the charity.

For example, if you donate
£100, the total value of your donation to the charity is £125 - so if you pay tax at 40% you can claim back £25. Or if you pay tax at 50% you can claim back £37. You can make this claim on your Self Assessment tax return.

You should always keep records of Gift Aid donations each year showing the date, the amount and the charities involved along with a running total so that you know the combined amount being claimed by the charities is no more than the tax you pay in the same financial year.

After making your donation, you'll be prompted by a text message to submit your details so that Gift Aid can be reclaimed. You will be directed to a form that can be filled in on your phone's web browser. Alternatively you can visit that link using a web browser on your computer to complete the Gift Aid form there.

Many people think that the Kosovo troubles are in the past and that all the problems that caused the war have been sorted out. That is far from the truth. Large numbers of families who lost their homes, possession and livelihoods, live in terrible conditions with no opportunity to work and no state aid to help buy food, clothes or shoes. Very few of their children go to school, this is not by choice, there are no places made available to them.

Hope and Aid Direct currently take two convoys of humanitarian aid each year to Kosovo. The charity was set up to help immediately after the war but at that time they never expected to be going out there every year since. The situation does not appear to be getting any better and Hope and Aid Direct will continue to help these people for as long as it can but these convoys of humanitarian aid are not cheap to organise and fund. It is only possible for this work to continue with support from people like you who donate and those who organise fund raising events. Thank you for your support.
