In Podujevo we visted also Family of Rexhep Hakiqi. There are six family members in this house. They live in deperate housing and social condition. The house is too old and is made of clay. You could easily see the cracks in the wall and ceiling was low. Mr. Rexhep is not well at all. His wife gave us a tour and talked about their family. She explained that her brother in law has joined them and he lives in a room with no window and is mentally disturbed, no body has the courage to talk to him he just comes and goes as he likes, sometimes he comes home drunk. The entire family lives in this room of 9m2.
This photo shows the situation of family Mevlude Sylejmani from Prishtina. Her husband died few months ago and she lives in these miserable social conditions along with her four children. The only income they receive is from Social welfare -70 Euros on monthly bases. There is a potential risk that even this support will be cut off when her youngest child reaches age of 5. The whole family lives in one room and a small hall as pre entrance to the room. This shelter was provided by her brother in law she does not own any piece of land or anything; MTS is trying to raise this issue with Municipal authorities. When there is a rain or snow the roof leaks inside and makes the room damp and humid, you could tell it by the entrance of the room. At the moment of visit we haven't seen the mom who has send her boy at the hospital since he had fallen off the stairs and cut his eye brow. As we were leaving the place mother showed up and thanked Bilall for visit and bringing on occasionally some humanitarian aid.
This picture gives a view from the outside of the home of Rexhep Hakiqi
This family of Islam Aliu from Prishtina. There are eight family members; his mother and sister are mentally retarded. They all live in this sort of a cave. You have to walk in as in the sewage system to get to their inhabitation. They all live in two small rooms. No bathroom, no kitchen, no running water. The dishes are washed on the ground with some extension pipe which supplies water for their needs. The rooms are dark no sunlight beam has ever fallen to their rooms! As you walk out of the room you can see a huge dumping pile just next to the house. The smell was terrible. They live there for years now; they had moved from their original place of living after their house was burned to ground, they hoped that in city there might be more opportunities for work or assistance. Children are so skinny of malnourishment, and the husband seemed retarded too.
In a suburb of Podujevo we visited the Ashkali Family. The family name was Basri Halili. There are seven family members, four children -three of them attending school. He lives with his old mother. They live in very hard social and economical conditions in one room and a hall. As we entered the room we noticed the cracks in the walls and roof. Mr. Basri is a war invalid and they live with only social assistance. The roof leaks every time it rains. They have neither kitchen nor bathroom.
