A&S Print Services Ltd

A&S Print Services Ltd, in Hutton, Essex, has now generously agreed to provide our Truck Stickers. These stickers give us an identity, but more than that, they contribute to our safety whilst we are in-the-field by making us recognisable as deliverers of international humanitarian aid.  We are exceptionally grateful to them.

In order to decide how to help or get more involved with Hope and Aid Direct, you'll want to know a bit more about what Hope and Aid Direct does, and how we do it?

Hope and Aid Direct (HaAD) volunteers gather together donations of aid, take it, and distribute it directly to those in greatest need

Aid is raised in various ways and from many sources. Various Round Tables have helped us in our cause. We have received help from some of the UK’s largest organisations (see the Thank YOU section) and we have received help from pensioners in the form of hand knitted blankets for a renovated maternity unit.

Almost all our work is carried in what was Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The area had already suffered the effects of the worst nuclear accident anywhere in the world, that was the Chernobyl disaster. Meanwhile parts of Belarus suffer unexplainable levels of poverty. White collar workers, such as doctors, in Belarus earn about £4 per week, and the cost of food is roughly the same as it is in the UK

Eastern Europe has suffered huge financial hardships as a direct result of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Balkans have suffered the break-up of former Yugoslavia and four wars in eight years and the pain is not over yet. Wars in the Balkans have given the world a new war crime "Ethnic Cleansing". Hope and Aid Direct is working directly with the survivors and assisting in resettlement. We do not use outside agencies to distribute our aid. However, we will often work hand in hand with outside organisations such as the British Army to help distribute aid.

We are not an organisation that can change governments or stop wars or disasters, but we do make a world of difference for individuals and families.

Our convoys always create a lot of
excitement and local interest, particularly amongst the children

A lot of bridges were bombed out when we took one of our first convoys

During 2004, Hope and Aid Direct undertook two aid convoys to Kosovo. Sadly they reported that the situation there for the local people is not improving, indeed it is probably worsening, as more and more non-governmental organisations (NGOs) withdraw.

Apart from the post-war (1999) economic boom in the construction and building industries, (bricks, tiles, windows and doors) almost entirely funded by international donations, there is virtually now no industry in any other sectors. The construction industry is now less than 13% of what it was in 2000.

Of the total population (closest estimates between 1.7 and 2.4 million) approximately one million are of working age, 325,000 are actually employed and, if subsistence farmers are excluded, the total number employed across Kosovo is just 147,000, ie, just 6.1% of the population. Yet Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe with 36,000 youngsters a year pushing into the labour market!

However, on a positive note, NGOs that are still present in Kosovo are working at reintegrating refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) into their home community, and in some places the mix of different ethnic backgrounds are co-habiting successfully. Elections have brought optimism among the majority of the population that things will change in the future.

How do you know what aid is needed?

Apart from food - which is always our top priority, everything else we need for our convoys is detailed in our Wish List.

Other ways to help Hope and Aid Direct

Now you know what we do, you'll want to know how you can help

The most important thing to remember is Hope and Aid Direct is 100% volunteer driven.

Everyone at Hope and Aid Direct is a volunteer and no one (including the Trustees of the charity) get paid a wage, which means 100% of donations go into providing and delivering the aid. We are always looking for new volunteers willing to give their commitment to worthwhile projects. You may not want to join the team as a convoy member, but this does not exclude you from being a valuable asset the team.

Other ways to help Hope and Aid Direct

Each truck which joins one of the convoys is driven by a team of volunteers who have raised the funds to hire the truck, filled it with aid and then joined the convoy. Every member uses up their holidays from work to join the convoy and some even take unpaid leave, such is their commitment. However, please be assured that we understand fully that not everyone can make that sort of commitment.

Depending on if you are an individual, a small team, a business or corporation, a school or college, there are a number of ways in which you can help.

Your school or college can help

Now that we have got you excited about joining us, you'll need to speak to one of our volunteers in your area. After speaking to one of our team members your next step is downloading our handbook to see how you can help one of the UK's foremost humanitarian aid charities help the people of the former Balkan states. You'll need a password to do this, which you'll get from the contact you speak to.

When you have read the handbook you will be able to decide if you want to join us on a convoy or be part of the home based team, fundraising or publicising our work in your town, amongst family, friends and colleagues and collecting aid. We can provide you with publicity material.

BUT - helping Hope and Aid Direct doesn't stop by volunteering, check out other ways to support us - some of them don't cost you a penny financially, or hours of your time ................

Wish List

See what's on our wish list, and remember, all the goods you donate are delivered directly into the hands of those who need it most.

How you can help

No one involved in Hope and Aid Direct takes a salary, or charges for their time and many of our team do not claim back any expenses that they incur. Our volunteers give up their spare time to raise the funds needed to hire, fill and take trucks on the convoys and use up some of their precious annual leave to travel to the Balkans to distribute the aid.

When a disaster strikes, people need necessities like food, clothes, and a dry place to sleep. They need essential supplies, basic tools and some of the many things it takes to start the rebuilding of  their lives.

Rotary International offers this immediate aid requirement by providing their Emergency Boxes. These Emergency Boxes are available for both hot and cold climates with the contents lists specifically tailored by the Red Cross, each box providing vital aid for adults and children. Held in Rotary warehouses, boxes filled with essential provisions are stored ready for instant dispatch whenever required and provide immediate relief for the victims.
